Commis Chef - Hampshire

Location: Petersfield, UK
Salary: £27,040 per year (£13 per hour)
Contract Type: Full Time (Permanent)

We are recruiting for a Commis Chef to join a much-loved, independently run restaurant with a strong local reputation and a fresh, modern “French-ish” menu. Established over 35 years ago, the establishment has grown into a vibrant venue with a beautiful garden bar and a focus on sustainability, seasonality, and local sourcing.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving kitchen that values creativity, teamwork, and work-life balance, while offering genuine opportunities for progression.

The Role

As Commis Chef, you will support a close-knit and experienced kitchen brigade, working with fresh, locally sourced ingredients in a fast-paced but supportive environment.

This role has been created due to increased demand and business growth.

What’s on Offer

  • £27,040 salary (based on 40 hours per week)
  • Additional £375+ per month in tips (Tronc system)
  • Standard 20 days holiday + bank holidays
  • Consistent working hours (typically finishing by 10 PM)
  • Two days off per week (Monday & Tuesday)
  • No regular split shifts (only when absolutely necessary)

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the kitchen team with food preparation and service
  • Work with fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients
  • Maintain high standards of food quality and presentation
  • Assist during busy service periods, particularly evenings and weekends
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative kitchen culture
  • Ensure cleanliness and food safety standards are upheld
  • Learn and develop skills across different sections

What We’re Looking For

  • Some experience in a professional kitchen (scratch cooking preferred)
  • Interest or experience in small plates and high-volume service
  • A genuine passion for food and cooking
  • A proactive attitude and willingness to learn from mistakes
  • Strong team player who values a healthy working environment
  • Positive personality

Working Environment

  • A relaxed, supportive kitchen
  • Open-plan setup with interaction between kitchen and front of house
  • Structured days with prep time and a proper break between 3 PM – 5 PM
  • Sunday finishes typically by 4–5 PM
  • Prep shifts starting no earlier than 10:30 AM
